This week (Sept. 2, 2010) actor Michael Douglas announced that he has Stage 4 throat cancer. Douglas is son of acting legend Kirk Douglas and is currently married to the glamorous Catherine Zeta-Jones Douglas. He started out on the televised police drama "The Streets of San Francisco with the late Karl Malden. Douglas is best known as the character Gordon Gecko in the movie "Wall Street" (also starring Charlie Sheen), who proclaimed: "Greed is good." in the eighties when Reagan was President. Douglas also appeared in the "Romancing the Stone" movies, "The War of the Roses" about a divorce that goes horribly wrong, "The Star Chamber", "An American President" with Annette Bening, in which he plays a Clinton-like Leader of the Free World, and a number of other movies. On David Letterman Douglas acknowledged his former drinking and smoking habits were likely factors in his cancer diagnosis. Although, in some respects he may only have himself to blame, I still can empathize with him because a few years ago I was diagnosed with a pre-cancerous esophagus; due to Barrett's Esophagitis or a form of Acid Reflux Disease. I don't mean to bring my own ailment into my tribute of actor/producer Michael Douglas, but I didn't even know I had Barret's and/or Acid Reflux until I happened to have an Endoscopy for a completely different condition. I don't know for sure, but I suspect I came down with Barret's and Acid Reflux due to drinking excessive acidic sodapop plus acidic foods and perhaps even artificial sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup. I used to drink several liters of tonic every single day until I gave it up. If cola can dissolve a nail perhaps noone should drink it. Anyway, Mr. Douglas, I hope you make a quick and complete recovery. Think positive, continue to love your gorgeous wife, and if possible continue to make great movies for people to see.
